SHEPPERTON, England and NTUNGAMO, Uganda, January 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Uganda Lodge Community Projects (UK registered charity no. 1150023) is proud to announce the launch of the new, purpose-built McNeil Medical Centre at the charity's site in Ruhanga, Uganda, thanks to generous donations from UK-based professional services firm ASE Consulting. The centre includes a main building, a separate patients' toilet block with flush toilets, a guard house, a purpose built incinerator, and will provide health education, immunisation, and will screen children for illnesses as well as treating the local community. The medical centre was commissioned in honour of ASE Consulting's former chairman and founder Duncan McNeil following his retirement from the business in 2013.

"The building took longer than anticipated, but many improvements were made along the way and now it is being admired from far and wide," said Uganda Lodge Community Projects' founder Ann McCarthy, 71. "Like our school, it will be run as a not-for-profit medical centre and any funding that we can get from outside of Uganda will help to keep the costs as low as possible for these subsistence farmers, and especially their elderly parents and young children," she added.
"If we can find more funding, we're hoping at some time in the future the building could be extended upwards to provide a ward to enable patients to be admitted for childbirth, malaria treatment, and so on." The UK charity has already funded the building of a low-cost 10-classroom school in the village, using donations from volunteers. Future projects include a toy and book library for local children and a vocational training centre to teach the next generation how to generate extra income alongside their farming activities. Steve Powell, Director at ASE Consulting, said: "ASE Consulting strives to ensure that our social responsibility matches our world class consultancy. We strongly felt that the McNeil Medical Centre was well aligned with our values and a fitting gift to Duncan on his departure from the business."
Interested in volunteering for Uganda Lodge Community Projects?
Uganda Lodge Community Projects hopes to find short- and long-term volunteers of all ages and skills to come and stay at Uganda Lodge and assist local staff at our school or medical centre. Following the completion of its medical centre in January 2014, volunteers with a medical background such as trainee doctors, nurses, dentists and first-aiders can be offered placements for part-qualified medical electives. Qualified dentists, doctors, and nurses would have an opportunity to update and train local personnel. Alongside volunteering, many of our guests opt to join a three-day safari to Queen Elizabeth National Park, go gorilla trekking, visit the nearby lakes, country markets, hot springs and go walking in the surrounding hills.
