Attention Entertainment and Music Editors
New York, January 17 - Island Records' recording artists U2 broke all previous records this week when their new single, 'Discotheque' was added to the entire panel of 97 Radio & Records (R&R) Alternative reporting radio stations in the U.S. within 48 hours of its shipment to radio.
A grand total of 343 radio stations of various formats added the single to their playlists this week. In addition, 'Discotheque' became the most played record at the Modern Rock format within 7 days of its release, according to Billboard Rock Monitor.
"U2 remains the master of alternative with 'Discotheque' yielding the highest number of first week (playlist) adds and spins in history," R&R Alternative Editor Sky Daniels confirmed.
"It's really not surprising that this song blew up as quickly as it did," states Kevin Weatherly, Vice President of Programming at KROQ FM Radio in Los Angeles. "Radio is starving for great music from established superstars. U2 has earned their place as the most important and biggest band in the world and once again, they don't disappoint. We can't wait for the album."
'Discotheque' will be available in stores as a cassette single and a maxi-CD on February 3 in Europe. 'Discotheque' is the first single from the forthcoming U2 album 'Pop', in stores on March 3 in Europe.
