BALTIC, South Dakota, Oct. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- An investigator and numerous sheriff's deputies, under the direction of the South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners, stormed the Baltic, South Dakota office of psychiatrist, Francis Bandettini on February 24, 2012. Now, Dr. Bandettini and his co-author have used this incident as one of many inspirations for a new thriller novel, American Jackal. The book is an Amazon Kindle "medical thriller" best seller.
"It's the old cliche," says Dr. Bandettini. "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. We took a bad experience and spun it into an amazing book. It's getting rave reviews on Amazon."
From Government Raid to Published Fiction
The authors are quick to point out that American Jackal is much more than a story about a raid on a psychiatrist's office. The heavy-handed visit only loosely relates to a few chapters in the book.
"Why would a medical inspector and several police officers need to make such an aggressive entrance into a psychiatrist's office?" co-author Matt Nilsen asks. "Was the doctor a suspect in a serious crime? Was there an imminent threat to a patient or his office staff? No!"
The board received a report that Bandettini possessed firearms. But, there were no guns in his office. Moreover, the board inspector and deputies failed to produce a warrant for this questionable weapons search. Bandettini later learned that the medical board acted on intentionally fabricated information from an ill individual.
"I just remember how unbelievable it was to experience sheriff's deputies in my office. Their hands were consistently at the ready atop their holstered guns," Bandettini said. "And, this is in the presence of my patients, with a state investigator and deputies making their demands and searching all over the place." Bandettini asserts the presence of six deputies humiliated patients and violated privacy rights in their tight-knit community. Since that day, both sides spent a lot of time and money on a protracted investigation. Eventually, the board dismissed the case against Dr. Bandettini, and the parties mended fences.
