SHERRY TO CONTINUE TRADITIONAL PAYMENT TO NEW POET LAUREATE
The Sherry Institute of Spain has announced it will continue the tradition started by James I in 1619 and provide "a butt of Sherry Sack" to the new Poet Laureate.
The first Poet Laureate, Ben Jonson, received the Sherry as part payment for his literary services to the Crown. Today a Sherry barrel contains 700 bottles of this unique wine and Graham Hines of The Sherry Institute of Spain said: "We are delighted to continue this tradition which represents the strong trading links dating back nearly 400 years, forged between Jerez where Sherry is produced, and Great Britain."
Andrew Motion will be invited to Jerez to select his barrel, an experience which the late Poet Laureate Ted Hughes much enjoyed when he visited the Sherry region in 1986.
The original Sherry sack enjoyed by Ben Jonson is still made by the traditional solera method and varies in style from crisp, dry Fino Sherry to nutty Amontillado and rich Cream Sherry. Andrew Motion will be able to choose a style to suit his taste on his visit and the Sherry will then be specially labelled and delivered to him.
