Post Office Counters, the UK's biggest National Lottery retailer, is gearing up to meet the expected rush for tickets for the new midweek lottery draw with the vast majority of National Lottery post offices staying open later, until 7.30pm, every Wednesday from tomorrow.

Based on worldwide research of the buying habits of lottery customers, it is estimated that more than 50 per cent of tickets for the midweek draws will be bought on Wednesdays - and half of those will be bought between 5pm and 7.30pm.

Post Office Counters' head of retail markets Alan Pennington said: "Our sales figures show how popular buying lottery tickets from a local post office is and we aim to ensure that we continue to offer a convenient lottery service.

"Extended opening hours at the vast majority of our National Lottery post offices will provide everyone with the chance of buying their lottery ticket at a time which suits them.

"As Britain's biggest single retailer of lottery tickets, post offices have become the natural home of the lottery and we welcome the opportunity to give even more of our customers the chance to become winners."

The 4,000 on-line post offices throughout the country have paid out more prize money than any other retailer since the National Lottery began. Post offices are also the only retailer to make on-the-spot payments for prizes up to £10,000.

Some of the late-opening National Lottery post offices remain open for the full range of Post Office Counters' services. To find out their nearest National Lottery post office, its opening hours and availability of other services, customers can ring the Post Office Counters customer helpline on 0345-223344.
