KAISER PERMANENTE LAUNCHES INTERNATIONAL ADVISORY SERVICE
Oakland, California, June 18 - Kaiser Permanente has launched an international management and advisory service in response to increasing interest in tapping its expertise as the world's largest integrated healthcare system.
"Over the past year, we have received an avalanche of requests for international healthcare management assistance," explained Jim Williams, president of Kaiser Permanente International (KPI), who also serves as senior vice president-strategic development for Kaiser Permanente nationally. "These requests are driven by a number of worldwide healthcare trends, including the need to control costs while providing higher quality care to a larger percentage of the population. Other factors include the privatisation of public health systems as well as the dramatic expansion of health care-related technologies and global communities."
KPI, a not-for-profit subsidiary of Kaiser Permanente, offers management and advisory services such as strategy and planning, medical economics, clinical and operational improvement, technology development, and facilities design and construction. "Our size, resources, investment in technology and experience in providing leading-edge health care provide us with a unique opportunity to help enhance the delivery and integration of health care in other countries," said Mr Williams.
Kaiser Permanente's U.S. organisation, which cares for 6.9 million Americans, expects to benefit from this new venture, too. "The knowledge and innovations gained from KPI will help further our social purpose to provide market-leading health care quality and value to our culturally diverse U.S. membership," explained David M. Lawrence, MD, chairman and chief executive officer of Kaiser Permanente.
Adds Mr Lawrence: "KPI will also allow us to respond to our multinational customers who want to use our management and advisory services to ensure that their overseas employees receive the highest quality of care."
Mr Williams says KPI will grow in a "very selective manner" and work with countries and organisations that have the need to develop the next generation of health care. Donna Wright, who has completed dozens of international consulting projects for Kaiser Permanente, will serve as director of international health for KPI.
