Alamo Honours Europeans Who Fought in Famous 1836 American Battle
SAN ANTONIO, February 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --
- 175th Anniversary of the Alamo Commemorated in San Antonio, Texas
Of the 189 brave defenders at one of America's most iconic battles, 24 hailed from Europe. This year marks the 175th Anniversary of the Battle of the Alamo, and San Antonio invites visitors from across Europe to join in commemorations throughout 2011.
Re-enactments, special promotions, hotel packages, themed itineraries and other activities are planned all year. A highlight: during the anniversary weekend, March 3-6, 2011, tens of thousands of yellow roses will be distributed to visitors to San Antonio, inviting them to lay the roses on an oversized wreath at the iconic Alamo in downtown San Antonio.
European defenders fighting for the independence of Texas from Mexico in 1836 included 11 from England, nine from Ireland, four from Scotland, two from Germany, one from Wales and one from Denmark.
"The 175th Anniversary of the Battle of the Alamo not only commemorates a significant time for San Antonio, but more importantly for world history," said Dr. Bruce Winders, historian and curator for the Alamo. "More than Texas history, more than the story of America, the Alamo is a symbol of standing against overwhelming odds for the pursuit of freedom. So many Europeans played an essential role in this iconic battle that is famed throughout the world," noted Dr. Winders.
The Alamo is located just steps from the River Walk, a network of stone paths that runs alongside the San Antonio River connecting hotels, shops, cafes, clubs, galleries, parks, open-air theaters and more. The River Walk is six meters below street level, and offers a green and shady urban oasis as well as boat tours along its 13 kilometers stretch.
Each year, more than 25 million people visit San Antonio, now the seventh-largest city in the U.S.
This diverse and cultural city was founded by Spanish missionaries in the 18th century and plays an important role in the history of Texas, the only U.S. state to have been its own country.
